FAQ

EMtone questions answered

These are the questions people put to us through the form and at the consultation, grouped the way they are asked. The price and the course for the thighs and buttocks come first because they are asked most. Where an answer depends on your skin, the free consultation is where the clinician settles it; call 0207 099 9641 or use the form below.

Price and the course

How much does EMtone cost, per session and per course?

EMtone is priced per area, per session and per course of four, confirmed in writing at your free consultation, with a price match on any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free. The quote says what each area covers and whether both thighs count as one area or two.

How much is EMtone for the thighs and buttocks, and how many sessions?

Four sessions over two to four weeks. Each area takes about 20 minutes, and in our experience a full thigh treatment takes 45 minutes to an hour, longer with the buttocks. The price for the areas you choose is on your written quote from the free consultation.

Can the whole thigh be treated, front, back, inner and outer?

Yes. The thighs can be treated all the way round, front, back, inner and outer, and the clinician agrees the areas with you at the free consultation. Your written quote names each area and says whether both thighs count as one area or two.

Which areas EMtone treats

Which areas can be treated?

The thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen, the four areas BTL names, and the upper arms. Thighs and buttocks are what most people ask us about. The thighs and buttocks page and the abdomen page cover the two main areas.

Can EMtone tighten the skin around my navel?

EMtone treats the appearance of cellulite on the abdomen and improves skin quality there; it is not a skin-tightening treatment for loose skin, which is a different problem. The clinician looks at the skin at the free consultation and says whether EMtone, or Morpheus8 or Sofwave at our sister clinics, fits.

Does it work on mild cellulite?

Yes, mild cellulite is treated the same way, with the same four sessions. The studies enrolled moderate and more marked cellulite and saw the biggest change in moderately severe cellulite, so the clinician grades yours at the free consultation and tells you how much smoother to expect.

Results

Does EMtone work, and how long does it last?

For moderate cellulite on the thighs and buttocks, yes: a 2018 study of 30 women found it reduced in 93% at three months, and a 2023 study of 30 patients (28 completed) found the severity score fell from 9.1 to 4.9 at six months. The result holds for several months in our experience, with a top-up every three to six months. See is EMtone worth it and how long results last.

Do you have before and after photographs?

Before and after photographs of our own patients, where we have them, are shown at the consultation with their consent, and we take your own before photograph so there is something to compare at three months.

Is EMtone the same as EMsculpt?

No. Both are made by BTL, but EMtone treats the appearance of cellulite and the skin with radiofrequency heat and targeted pressure energy, while EMsculpt NEO builds muscle and reduces fat with electromagnetic contractions and heat. They are sometimes combined, EMsculpt first for the shape and EMtone for the surface.

Does EMtone reduce fat or help me lose weight?

No. The studies measured circumference changes of a few centimetres that partly rebounded, and weight did not change. For fat reduction, EMsculpt NEO at our sister clinic, and the clinician plans the combination where both are wanted.

Safety and comfort

Does EMtone hurt?

Not for most people. It feels like a hot stone massage with strong vibration; you should feel intense warmth but never burning, and the clinician adjusts the energy if you do. In the six-month study patients rated the discomfort 2.8 out of 10 on average.

Is there any downtime?

None. The skin is pink and warm for a short while and you go straight back to your day.

Can EMtone cause thread veins or make varicose veins worse?

Varicose veins or a history of clots rule EMtone out, so the clinician looks at your legs at the consultation. None of the published EMtone studies reported a vein problem among its side effects. Tell the clinician about any thread veins you have, and they advise you on your own legs before you book.

Is EMtone safe for darker skin, and is there a BMI limit?

The published studies treated skin types II to V, from fair to brown skin, and body mass indexes up to 36. Type VI, the darkest skin type, was not in the studies, so the clinician assesses your skin first; no pigment change was reported in the studies, and we treat every skin type conservatively.

Who should not have EMtone?

Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or in IVF treatment; anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or metal implants; anyone with an active skin infection, eczema or rosacea in the area, a wound or a deep peel in the last three months, varicose veins or a history of clots, a bleeding disorder, poor healing, isotretinoin in the last twelve months, or cancer. The clinician checks the full list with you at the free consultation.
