GUIDE

Is EMtone the same as EMsculpt?

No. They come from the same manufacturer, BTL, and they are often used together, which is why the names get mixed up, but they do different things. EMtone treats the appearance of cellulite and the quality of the skin over it, with radiofrequency heat and targeted pressure energy delivered together through one applicator. EMsculpt NEO builds muscle and reduces fat, with electromagnetic contractions and heat. If your concern is dimpling on the thighs and buttocks, EMtone is the treatment; if it is a soft stomach or a flat bottom, EMsculpt NEO; and for both, the two are combined.

What EMtone does

EMtone heats the skin to 40 to 45°C with monopolar radiofrequency while pressure pulses, ten a second, work the tissue mechanically. In BTL's description it is the first device to deliver thermal and mechanical energy at the same time, aimed at the structures that make cellulite show: the fibrous bands that pull the skin down, the enlarged fat chambers that push it up, the loss of elasticity and the poor circulation. It is FDA-cleared in the US for the temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. A session is about 20 minutes per area, feels like a hot stone massage with strong vibration, and has no downtime. The how it works page goes through it.

What EMsculpt NEO does

EMsculpt NEO makes a muscle contract thousands of times in a 30-minute session with HIFEM, high-intensity electromagnetic energy, while radiofrequency heats the fat over it, building muscle and reducing fat on the abdomen, buttocks, arms, thighs and calves. It changes the shape of the area; it does not treat the dimpling of the skin. EMsculpt NEO is provided by our sister clinic at the same address.

When they are combined

Cellulite on the buttocks often sits over muscle that has lost tone, and a 2021 study of 15 patients gave EMsculpt and then EMtone in the same visit, four times over two weeks, on the abdomen or the buttocks. At the free consultation the clinician plans whether you need one or both, and in which order.

Which one for you

  • Dimpling and uneven skin on the thighs, buttocks, hips or abdomen: EMtone. The thighs and buttocks page covers the main area.
  • A soft abdomen, a flat bottom, weak arms or calves: EMsculpt NEO.
  • Both, on the same area: a combined plan, EMsculpt first.

The full EMtone guide compares the two in a table, and the clinician at the free consultation tells you plainly which applies to your skin.
