Cellulite on the abdomen, dimpled or uneven skin around the navel and below it, is less talked about than the thighs but is one of the four areas BTL names for EMtone, with the thighs, hips and buttocks. The treatment is the same: radiofrequency heat and targeted pressure energy together, about 20 minutes a session, four sessions over two to four weeks, no downtime. It is done at EMtone Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
What it does on the abdomen
The skin of the abdomen dimples for the same reasons as the thighs: bands under the skin, fat chambers between them, lost elasticity, slow circulation. In BTL's account, EMtone warms the skin to 40 to 45°C so it builds collagen and elastin and works the tissue mechanically to loosen the bands and move fluid. The six-month study of EMtone on its own included the stomach and abdomen among the areas treated, and across all areas the cellulite severity score fell from 9.1 to 4.9 at six months. It is FDA-cleared in the US for the temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite.
What it does not do
EMtone is not a fat-reduction or weight-loss treatment, it is not a skin-tightening treatment, and it is not for loose skin after large weight loss or an apron of skin. A soft abdomen with fat and weak muscle is EMsculpt NEO's area, at our sister clinic at the same address, and the two are sometimes combined, EMsculpt first for the shape and EMtone for the surface. The clinician plans the order at the free consultation. Skin that has loosened after pregnancy is assessed on its own at the consultation, and the clinician says whether Morpheus8 or Sofwave at our sister clinics suits it, with EMtone for any cellulite on top.
The session and the result
About 20 minutes with the skin held at 40 to 45°C; it feels like a hot stone massage with strong vibration. No downtime. In our experience the skin feels smoother after the second or third session, the main change over three months, when we take the after photograph, and a hold of several months with a top-up every three to six months. The sessions page sets out the course.
Who it suits
Moderate cellulite or uneven skin on the abdomen in someone whose weight is stable, not pregnant, with no electronic or metal implant and no active skin problem there. The full EMtone guide carries the complete list of what rules it out, and the thighs and buttocks page the main area.
